The Design

"Check yourself out."

In this intensive 3 week project my team was asked to design a self checkout service for retail shoppers that addresses the issue of control.

I led the team of six students to research existing self checkout services and shoppers, and design a new service from the ground up. We carefully analyzed what exactly shoppers and businesses want and need from a self-check service, and concentrated on designing a system that would be applicable in many different retail environments.

My Role
My role included leading the team through the design process, conducting field research, storyboarding, wireframing and designing interfaces, scripting signage and instructions, and presenting.

Our final design relies on RFID to provide a seamless checkout experience. Control of the process is left in the user's hands by giving them the opportunity to review and approve (or make changes to) their digital receipt. Computer vision and a scale are used to handle produce, while the bagging area is separated from the kiosks, allowing for a smoother flow of people.
